Literacy Volunteers experience
Virtual Literacy volunteering
I have been working with my present learner for over a year now. We have only met in person once and communicate totally via e-mail. He wanted to brush up his writing skills and so I provide Literacy support.
At first he seemed rather reluctant to email how he felt. It was just short contact e-mails, but after a break from learning he was able to tell me that he didn’t know what to write sometimes in e-mails to me. It felt like quite a breakthrough. Now I have seen steady progress with him. For example the more worksheets he does of a similar subject the less mistakes he makes to the point where everything is correct.
This type of volunteering has proved to be very interesting as well as very rewarding to me. To be able to work together on a particular project regardless of where we live is fantastic. I'm disabled and it means I can volunteer flexibly to suit my own health. Volunteering is such a worthwhile thing to do. I have found it to be a great confidence builder. I have learnt so many different skills while volunteering and continue to do so.
