Speak for Yourself

"Remember, help is available; all you have to do is ask!"

Although Colleges and Universities do provide information about support, some Lead learners have reported that this can be intimidating and that it doesn’t present a picture that seems to apply to the majority.  For instance, memory issues and visual disruption caused by medication can have an enormous impact on the student, but because a condition is unseen a person may feel embarrassed asking for the necessary support.

A group of disabled people from Aberdeenshire have created an easy to read booklet to explain what support is available to encourage disabled students to ask for what they need.

Beyond the booklet

Seven of the nine members of the "Speak for Yourself" group have since become Lead volunteers.  They have supported the organisation by reviewing policies and procedures and are part of the PQASSO steering group helping to make the organisation more effective.

The group have been approached by Margo Learmonth, Robert Gordon University, to look at the recruitment and selection process within the midwifery department.  They'll be looking at application forms and processes and case studies.

And it doesn't stop there!  Find out what Linda , Dorothy,  Helen and Dorothy Ann have achieved personally from the project and what they are up to now.
