Scottish summer is well and truly here. Heat waves, barbeques, paddling pools and lots of sun cream. We want to make sure that you can enjoy your summer while staying safe online. Unfortunately, cyber threats don’t take holidays so it’s important that you remember to be safe and vigilant while online this summer. So this summer we’ve released our #SecureSummer series of things you should watch out for this summer, and top tips for staying safe.

This article is the first in the series and gives an overview of the top themes/learning topics of the summer. Each top theme has it’s own #SecureSummer article explaining more about the theme and giving links to further learning about that theme.

Watch out for

  • Timeshares or holiday club memberships – scammers are advertising fake opportunities that you could lose money on.
  • Holiday listings or adverts on social media or unverified websites – these could be look real and sound like a really good deal, but they might turn out not to exist after you’ve paid for them.
  • Emails from travel companies – these could be phishing emails. Even if you are expecting an email from a travel company, hotel or airline, double check it’s from a trusted sender.

Top tips

  • Don’t post on social media when you’re away – this makes your home a target for burglars and makes you a target for scammers.
  • Take your time and double check everything – if that email doesn’t look quite right or that deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Use Which? or Trustpilot to check reviews to see if the website or company is safe and can be trusted.
